First Legacy CCU – New Account Drive

P8perglass Jewelry/Beads and The Vine Event Planning is co-hosting a “New Account Drive” during the entire month of September at First Legacy Community Credit Union in Salisbury, NC. We’re encouraging the local Salisbury/Rowan County African American community to “bank black”. This is a movement taking place across the United States signifying a shift towards economic empowerment at a local community level. Our hopes is that this is the beginning of greater things to come towards building a stronger community. Moving Forward: We-The-People Coalition

Legacy MonthOur very own, Tonya Cross, was a part of a panel discussion hosted by We-The-People Coalition on Tuesday, November 25th at Love Christian Center, East Spencer, NC. The event was in response to the Ferguson decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson for the murder of Michael Brown. It was an assembly of community citizens, activists, and organizations. The purpose was to provide a forum to openly express feelings, concerns, and resolutions relating to Ferguson and our local African American community.

The discussion moderator was Scott Teamer, president of the Salisbury-Rowan NAACP Branch. Other panel speakers were Rev. Carrie Bolton, Rev. Anthony Smith, Kenneth Fox Muhammad, Kenny Hardin, and Alex Clark. Topics discussed included the need for collective action, economic development, community leadership, knowledge of self, and community collaboration.

Birthed from the meeting was a collective action to create a database of community organizations and local businesses. The Vine Events has accepted the task of collecting the data and we need YOUR HELP. Visit We-The-People Database to submit information about your community organizations and/or businesses to include in the database.

Moving Forward – “Don’t Believe The Hype”

Legacy Month

Thanks to everyone who attended our community dialogue “Don’t Believe The Hype”. Media outlets use propaganda to influence how and where we spend our money. Our facilitators, Anthony Smith, Tatia Seward, and Desere Cross, encouraged us to be media literate and consider source of information and purpose. They also emphasized the importance of financial literacy which is an understanding of money; how to make, manage, and invest it. In moving our community forward, it was emphasized that we must start using our buying power to sow back into our community. We learned that as consumers we are job creators and was encouraged to sow our dollars into local small businesses and organizations.

We also reviewed a citizen driven job creation model by a community similar to our own. The citizens of this model came together, sat down, and determined what made their community unique and what resources they already had to build on.  Collectively we considered the same things and came up with ideas of how we can network together to create jobs within our community as well.

Our first community dialogue of 2014 was a catalyst for a citizen driven community development plan. We identified one another’s gifts and talents and how we could utilize them in developing a strategy for our community. We chose not to believe the “hype” and to move forward.

Anthony Smith is the Pastor of Mission House located in Salisbury, NC.
Tatia Seward is a local Community Organizer in Salisbury, NC.
Desere’ Cross is a Journalism/Communications Major at UNC-CH
