Congrats To K’s Kicks!

K's_KicksThe winner of our Salisbury-Rowan Black Business Pitch Contest was Kari Johnson of K’s Kicks! Our winner received a monetary, service, and media package that was provided by local black owned businesses and organizations. Because of our community’s generosity, we were able to provide a service package for all contestants! Our other contestants were Sierra Watkins of SieBration Bar and Destiny Stone and Daniel King of The Music House Inc..

Kari is a lover of all things creative. Music, writing, and art are passions of hers. She is a 2007 graduate of Livingstone College with a Bachelor’s degree in English. She hopes to continue growing her business K’s Kicks as well as writing her Children’s book series Dallas Does based on her 6 year old daughter.

Kari began K’s Kicks in 2018 after personal projects she shared online were praised and people began to inquire about her work. She realized that everyone has a pair of shoes they aren’t ready to part with that she is able to bring back to life. Over the course of a year through social media and word of mouth, a buzz has began in the Rowan community as well as other places about her work. Her ultimate goal is to be able to focus 100% on her business and partner with schools in the community to provide shoes to students each year.

A Young Black Man Going Ego Trippin’

Our visionary Tonya Cross is the organizer of local community conversation “Peace Circle” that launched in July 2015.  The Peace Circle creates a safe space for open and honest dialogue about social issues that impact the local community. The conversations are held the first Tuesday of every month at Mean Mug Coffee Company, 1024 S. Fulton Street, Salisbury NC.

Peace Circle hosted their first parent/child workshop sessions “What’s Your Role In The Village?” in September 2015 which addressed how systemic racism, discrimination, and stereotypes impacts the local community. A Young Black Man Going Ego Trippin’ photo series was inspiration for artwork and poetry created by local youth who attended the workshops. Mrs. Carla Marlin Smith a parent engagement specialist at Parent University of Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools was the workshop facilitator. Ms. Anneca Raines of Uhkneeka Rainz Photography is the photographer of the photo series.

A Young Black Man Going Ego Trippin’ is currently being featured at Waterworks Visual Arts Center, 123 E. Liberty Street, Salisbury NC. The photo exhibit includes art and poems created by the local youth who attended Peace Circle’s workshop! The young men in the photo series also have Salisbury NC/Rowan County ties. The exhibit will be up till September and we would like to encourage everyone in Salisbury, NC and surrounding areas to visit the exhibit. Thanks for your continued support!

My Sister’s Keeper

We’re celebrating Black History Month! Join us for “My Sister’s Keeper” on Saturday, February 25th at 4pm at Westridge Place Apartments Clubhouse, 100 Donner Dr, Salisbury NC. We will have a panel discussion about financial literacy, group economics, and community development. Nutrition: The Missing Link

In November, I started a new journey. I hired a nutritionist with hopes of maintaining my health. I recently took an extensive health assessment at my job and my only low score had been my BMI (Body Mass Index). After talking with my company nurse, we both concluded that because I exercise regularly and have good eating habits my blood work and other assessments were great!

Being 40+ and on no medications, I was pleased with my results, however my BMI still bothered me. I decided to hire a nutritionist. I had a consult with the nutritionist and in a few days she sent me my eating plan. Interesting enough, everything that was on my plan I already had in my kitchen! So, I was eating the right foods, but not the right combination of foods. I also wasn’t drinking enough water and getting proper rest.

I have been amazed at the difference these small changes have made. Not only have I lost weight, but I’ve lost inches in my chest, waist, and hips. I finally realized that nutrition was the missing link in my health plan. Shout out to my nutritionist ShLanda of Balanced By Burton. She is very knowledgeable and has been my biggest cheerleader!

NYC Trip For Urbanworld 2016

In July I got an email from ArrayNow informing me that I was receiving a pass to Urbanworld Film Festival 2016! The pass was a thank you for valuing and supporting their work. Array was originally AFFRM (African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement), which was founded by one of my SHEroes Ava DuVernay. I became an ArrayRebel a few years ago because foremost I LOVE black film. Secondly, I understand the importance of supporting indie films by people of color and women filmmakers.

I was already off from work during the time of film festival, because I had originally planned to travel to Washington DC for the inaugural of the National Museum of African American History and Culture with my hubby. I’m a black history nerd too! My husband convinced me to bypass the trip to DC and head to NYC for the film festival. He also made it very clear that he still planned to attend museum opening without me!

Urbanworld Film Festival was amazing! I was in film heaven. I got an opportunity to see some great independent films and engage in post-screening dialogues. I also meet some amazing people from fellow film enthusiasts to filmmakers! It was like a big family reunion centered around the love of film. Thanks ArrayNow, I will forever cherish the experience!

First Legacy CCU – New Account Drive

P8perglass Jewelry/Beads and The Vine Event Planning is co-hosting a “New Account Drive” during the entire month of September at First Legacy Community Credit Union in Salisbury, NC. We’re encouraging the local Salisbury/Rowan County African American community to “bank black”. This is a movement taking place across the United States signifying a shift towards economic empowerment at a local community level. Our hopes is that this is the beginning of greater things to come towards building a stronger community.
