Did You Know…

img_0786I was recently invited to speak at a health and wellness conference at a local church. I was asked to share about taking medications from a pharmacist perspective and decided to address prescription non-compliance. Prescription non-compliance is the failure to take prescribed medication and/or follow prescribed medication instructions.

I shared three DYK (Did You Know) compliance stats with participants. The conference attendees were given an opportunity to share their personal experiences and opinions about prescription non-compliance. It was a very engaging dialogue and we all learned much from each other. Below are the DYK’s and collective conclusions and solutions we developed during the workshop I facilitated.

#1 DYK- Up to one-third (1/3) of prescriptions written get filled at a pharmacy.1 Many of my workshop guest were not surprised by this stat. When asked why they feel prescriptions don’t get filled, the reasons ranged from some people don’t like taking medication to not making time to go to pharmacy. However, the majority agreed that cost was the primary reason. A solution we came up with is asking their provider (doctor, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner) to write for generic drugs and larger quantities, which are usually more cost-effective.

#2 DYK – Fifty percent (50%) of people taking chronic medications stop taking it in first year.1 I also shared that the largest drop is within the first month.1 The reasons guests offered for this stat was patient not fully understanding why they’re taking medication, medication side effects and cost once again was the primary reason. This opened the door for me to introduce the importance of patients being their own advocates. I encouraged them to ask providers questions about things they’re unsure of and not to be afraid of getting second opinions.

#3 DYK – The annual cost of non-compliance in the U.S. is ~ $290 billion.1  Participants all agreed that not taking medications prescribed has the potential to lead to worsening of the condition that you initially sought medical attention for. Which in turn leads to more medical visits, labs, and even hospitalization, all along driving up cost. I shared the importance of being proactive towards any physical ailments or conditions they may experience, whether they choose traditional therapies or home remedies. I emphasized the importance of listening to your body and being cooperative in its healing or restorative process.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own…I Corinthians 6:19 NIV

I closed the workshop with the above scripture and a quick review of stewardship. According to the scripture, our bodies don’t belong to us; they belong to God. We are simply stewards over the body we have been given. As good stewards, it’s our responsibility to properly care for our bodies by eating healthy and exercising. My stewardship course is a scriptural based self-study guide that gives you a better understanding of stewardship in the three areas of finance, health, and resources. Why You Should Read Your Friend’s Blog

We all have that friend that writes stuff on the internet. I think they call it “blogging” or some new trendy name like that. Kids these days and their need for self-expression.

“Justice is what Love looks like in public” – Mia and Dre’s statement for March 4th

The Vine Events is proud to call Mr. LeAndre Blakeney a friend! Continue to fight the power.

At 7:45 on March 4, 2016, while the community roared outside Disney’s The Lion King at DPAC, Le’Andre Diamond Blakeney and Mia Hutchins-Cabibi dropped a banner inside the theater, reading “This Jail Kills: Enjoy the Show.”  They were removed and detained by police and, thankfully, later released without charge.  This is the statement that they wrote ahead of time to explain their action, which was also released to the press while they were in custody.

A great divide exists (Lk 16:26) between the ostentatious entertainment and frivolity of the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) and the starving, tortured, and dying prisoners in the Durham County Jail.  DPAC profits off of the invisibility of the lynching of black bodies across the street while exoticizing all things African on its stage.  On January 19, Matthew McCain died in the Durham County Jail after detention staff had medically neglected him for months.  As…

Tectonic Impact of Conversation

img_5973Below is a Facebook post shared by one of our Peace Circle community partners Pastor Anthony Smith of Mission House. We felt like our readers would enjoy it!

In a world full of injustice we rightfully long for change now. Not just any kind of change but big change. When I consider this need for big change I think about natural occurrences that represent big changes to the landscape of our world. Like tsunamis and earthquakes. Natural events like these alter our world in profound ways.

But…

Before there are tsunamis and earthquakes there are the unseen subtle shifts in tectonic plates under the ocean. Seemingly insignificant and unnoticed.

So it is with the community transformation that we long for. We long for the big changes that will turn things around. And we often undervalue the small seemingly insignificant tectonic shifts and movement needed to create the big change.

This is how I see ‪#‎PeaceCircle‬. Peace Circle is tectonic movement. It is the calling forth of meaningful, challenging, and hospitable dialogue that helps create the Big Change we want to see in the world. No tectonic shift no tsunamis nor earthquakes.

Tsunamis and earthquakes don’t just happen!

This is a hard sell in a world of instant gratification. But what must be remembered is that patient conversation after conversation seeds of deep transformation are being sown in our community.

I really want you to consider being a part of this tectonic movement called Peace Circle convened by our lead organizer Tonya Cross of The Vine Events.

It’s easy to make light of and undervalue conversation among fellow community members. But history teaches us that major social change was started by such conversations.

See you at this upcoming Peace Circle!
