3 Things to Consider Before Joining a Holiday Gift List

Someone recently invited me to be a part of a magazine’s holiday gift list. When I asked for more information, they sent me a fee amount to participate. That was a red flag…no one has ever charged me to be on their holiday gift list. I’ve never heard of the magazine, so I did a Google search and decided to decline their offer. I’ve been in this marketing game long enough to know all visibility isn’t GOOD visibility.

When selecting visibility opportunities like gift lists, it’s three things you should take into consideration.

  • Platform Audience – Do your research and determine if the platform serves your ideal customer. Since it was a gift list, will the platform audience be buying for your ideal customer? The content on the platform will answer this for you. The topics shared will interest your ideal customer or someone buying for them. In addition, is your ideal customer represented in the platform photos? When folks see themselves represented, they’re more comfortable with purchasing.
  • Platform Stats – Any reputable platform will be willing to provide you with their stats. The number of readers and demographics is important. It helps you assess the quality of visibility you’re going to get. This is another way to ensure the platform serves your target audience.
  • Platform Social Media – Research the platform’s account; check out the number of followers and engagement (likes, comments, shares, etc.). Ask if content you’re a part of will be shared on the platform’s social media pages. This is another way to optimize visibility.

All collaborations should be a win-win for everyone involved. Make sure you get a clear understanding of benefits of your participation and what’s expected from you.
